Cingular begins selling the first 3G PDA

Cingular Wireless will begin selling a new broadband PDA on Nov. 15, a company executive told eWEEK. The new HSDPA/UMTS enabled Cingular 8525 includes a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a wide screen, and it also supports quad-band EDGE, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Cingular Wireless will unveil the ir latest offering in the burgeoning smartphone market, Cingular 8525 Pocket PC Monday. The device is Cingular's first HSDPA-enabled smartphone. HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access) is a network standard that enables average data-transfer speeds of 400-700 kilobits per second. "This is our first 3G (smartphone) that we're going to be launching here," said Mike Woodward, executive director of mobile professional solutions at Cingular.

Nokia connects with new wireless tech

The Finnish handset maker has developed an offshoot of the popular Bluetooth wireless technology, dubbed Wibree, that utilises radio waves over relatively short distances to connect devices like PCs, handsets and PDAs. Wibree uses the same frequency band as Bluetooth and the same hardware, but uses less power to send small streams of information over short distances. As a result, the devices that will be capable of communicating wirelessly are getting smaller.

Cingular launches new service with XM, Yahoo, Napster, eMusic

Cingular Wireless on Thursday launched the first wide-ranging subscription music service for mobile phones, striking deals with XM Satellite Radio, Yahoo Music, Napster and eMusic.

By paying a monthly fee ranging from $9 to $15, Cingular customers can listen to commercial-free satellite radio or choose from several millions songs at three of the nation's more popular music-download sites. Short clips of songs could be sampled for free and, in the case of Napster, could be purchased for 99 cents each.

Cingular is about to launch a music service that will offer tracks from Napster, Yahoo! and eMusic, according to a Wall Street Journal report. If the report turns out to be accurate - and the WSJ says that an official announcement may be made today - it suggest that there is no truth in the rumors that Cingular would be the first carrier to support Apple's anticipated 'iPhone'.

Typically, each time users of dual-mode phones try to access Internet services, they must choose which network they want to connect to, sometimes from a list of multiple cellular and Wi-Fi networks.
