Matsushita, Samsung, Nokia Sued Over Bluetooth Use

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Samsung Electronics Co. and Nokia, are accused of using patented wireless-communication technology without permission in a lawsuit brought by the Washington Research Foundation. Matsushita, the world's biggest consumer-electronics maker, its Panasonic unit, as well as Samsung and Nokia are infringing four patents for technology sold under the ``Bluetooth'' name, the foundation said in a suit filed Dec. 21 in Seattle federal court. The technology lets users exchange data between mobile phones, PCs and other devices without using cables.

Nokia wins 320 EUR million network contract

Nokia has won a major GSM/GPRS/EDGE network expansion contract from leading Russian operator MegaFon that will see it deliver both radio and core equipment as well as a range of services, helping MegaFon deliver advanced mobile solutions to its fast-growing subscriber base. The value of the agreement is over EUR 320 million, and equipment deliveries have already begun.

It has been a shaky 2006 for Nokia While the mobile-phone titan has had a bumper year for handset sales and shipments, it has also been dogged by shrinking margins and unrelenting competition from the likes of No. 2 Motorola (MOT), which has grabbed the initiative with its line of thin phones. Paradoxically, Nokia's successful drive into emerging markets also increased its sales of commodity-type phones -- hardly a formula for high profitability.

Ericsson and the Stockholm School of Economics have agreed to create a program aiming to generate in-depth knowledge of Chinese business and economics and China's impact on global trade patterns. The program will create a base for a unique competence center in Stockholm, Sweden. The Ericsson China program comprises several components designed to support the capacity of Sweden to follow developments in China, strengthen Swedish-Chinese relations in economics, business and research and its impact on the world economy. The program embraces economic and business research, education, seminars and conference programs as well as advice.

Vodafone yesterday faced a new rival in its drive to win control of Hutchison Essar after a minority shareholder turned the battle for control of the Indian mobile operator into a three-way fight. Essar, the Indian conglomerate that holds a 33 per cent stake in Hutchison Essar, has offered $11bn (£5.6bn) for the rest of the company, the fourth-largest in the Indian mobile market.

Two years on from the Asian Tsunami that devastated many communities, Nokia has announced the launch of several new projects to help young people in India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia with training and new skills. The initiative is designed to help young people find jobs or set up small businesses, building long-term livelihoods for themselves and their families. Nokia provided immediate disaster relief aid and funding to the region affected by the Tsunami in December 2004. It also pledged EUR 2.5 million for longer-term recovery to help young people rebuild their lives through access to training and apprenticeships.
